Dr. Sue Varma is a distinguished psychiatrist and cognitive behavioral therapist based in New York City, with over two decades of private practice experience. She has served as a pioneering medical director and psychiatrist for the esteemed 911 mental health program at NYU. Alongside her clinical work, Dr. Varma is the Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at New York University Langone Health. The American Psychiatric Association recognized her accomplishments and honored her as a distinguished fellow, the highest honor bestowed upon its members.
During the 9/11 attacks, Dr. Varma was in clinical rotations in New York City as a medical student. The experience shaped her decision to pursue training in trauma psychiatry. Later, she became involved in the World Trade Center Environmental Health Care Center program at NYU, which integrated mental health services with medical care for individuals affected by the 9/11 attacks. That experience sparked her interest in resilience and the factors that contribute to it, like optimism.
In Practical Optimism, Dr. Varma shares insights and strategies to empower individuals to cultivate a more optimistic outlook. Through her discussions on emotional processing, problem-solving, and self-compassion, she provides practical tools for navigating challenges with resilience and positivity.
